2011 INTERNATIONAL RALLY OF QUEENSLAND The 2011 International Rally of Queensland (“IROQ”) will be based on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast from Friday 13 May to Sunday 15 May. It will host Round 2 of the prestigious FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship and Round 2 of the Australian Rally Championship, will be supported by other categories including the popular Classics and All-Comers. Australia’s biggest championship rally of the year and one of only two FIA rally events in Australia – the other being the Rally Australia World Rally Championship round in September – IROQ is part of a series that also visits China, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand and New Caledonia. Teams and drivers come from throughout the region, providing fans with the kind of stunning driving displays that have made international rally a sport with a fanatical following. At IROQ, they’ll test themselves against the best Aussie outfits – and there are no guarantees who’ll win. IROQ, formerly known as Rally Queensland, is in its 43nd year and is the longest-running State round in the Australian Rally Championship. For all that time, it’s been run by the highly-experienced team at Brisbane Sporting Car Club Ltd. IROQ’s popularity has continued to grow and, with its elevation to FIA status, it has been recognised by the Queensland Government, through its Events Queensland Regional Development Program, division, and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Both have committed support to the 2012 event. The FIA Asia Pacific Rally Championship has a vast audience in more than 55 countries for its dedicated television programming. It also will be featured in Australia in one-hour programmes on free-to-air Network Ten and its digital sports channel, ONE HD. While a sporting spectacle of the highest order, IROQ also will deliver significant economic benefits to the Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions through visits by team members, supporters and fans and through the television showcasing of the many natural tourist attractions. |
